Profile Information

Location:
Southern California

Male
Website:
http://www.crosshatchery.com
Area(s) of Interest or Expertise:
My professional career includes comic book editing, writing, lettering & typography, as well as extensive work as a digital prepress production artist in the print industry. My educational background includes a focus on Christian apologetics and philosophy. My "fan" interests include Silver Age superhero comics, Japanese giant monster films, mythology & folklore, and the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
My Testimony: (We encourage members to share briefly about how their faith in Christ has impacted their lives.)
I was baptised into a Lutheran church as an infant, raised in a Quaker church. Began to take my faith more seriously as a teenager, spent my high school and college years attending a non-denominational Evangelical church. Participated in the certificate program of Christian apologetics at the former Simon Greenleaf University (now part of Trinity International). Later, while in college, attended a small Southern Baptist congregation where I met my future wife, and am currently attending a local congregational church. My spiritual journey has taken me in and out of various degrees of social activism, political conservatism, emotionalism, intellectualism, Arminianism, Calvinism -- but through it all, what matters is not what my own personal struggles or interests may be at any given moment, but the love and mercy of Jesus Christ at work in me.
Dream Job: (If you could have your dream job in the comics industry, what would it be?)
My ideal would be to have the time and resources to devote full-time as writer and self-publisher of my own various comic book series. If the question is about playing with someone else's toys, my dream job would be a scriptwriter for DC's "Legion of Super-Heroes".
Favorite Comic Creators:
The raw imagination of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The script pacing and interwoven subplots of Paul Levitz's Legion Of Superheroes. The characterization and worldbuilding of Kurt Busiek's "Astro City". Artwise, I like a wide range of styles; as a visual storyteller, I'm fond of the rock solid consistency of Curt Swan, the detailed draftsmanship of George Perez, and the panel layouts of John Byrne.

Phoenix Comicon 2011 - Full Report

Posted on June 6, 2011 at 12:00pm 5 Comments

Well, it's taken me a week to sort through my thoughts, but here's a more detailed convention report on the Phoenix Comicon over Memorial Day weekend. (My apologies for the relative lack of pictures -- I'm very much an introvert when it comes to asking total strangers for the picture, despite how cool their costumes might…

Phoenix Comicon 2011 - CCAS interview

Posted on June 3, 2011 at 11:42am 0 Comments

More updates from last weekend's show... While we were wrapping up at the Con, a comic book news website asked to interview us about the CCAS and New Creation Now. Ralph handled the interview while Don and I continued to work the table (there was a surprising crowd of people visiting us right before the show closed.)

I find it amusing that we…

Phoenix Con 2011

Posted on May 30, 2011 at 11:00am 0 Comments

Well, I'm back from my very first visit to the Phoenix Comicon. I'll have to wait a couple days to collect my thoughts before I can post a full convention report -- four days of insufficient sleep have left my memories a little jumbled. But it was a fun convention, I had a wonderful time hosting the CCAS booth, and we had great opportunities for fellowship with the many other Christians in attendance at the show. (And if any of you are signing up for the CCAS social network as a…

Thoughts on the Long Beach Comic-Con

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 9:47am 1 Comment

Sorry for the late report on this -- I had to dive back in to a particularly hectic week right after finishing the show.

This was only the second Long Beach Comic-Con, and the first time the CCAS has had a table there. I was able to get in for free as a "Pro", and I attended Saturday and Sunday. (I was working late on Friday, and had to miss the Friday panel about Crumb's Genesis book. My thanks to Buzz for posting a recording of it!)

My overall impressions: online… Continue

Hello Kevin, I just noticed the note on the side of the last page concerning the APAzine and the shortage of contributors.  I am not sure if that is an old notice or not, but I would be highly interested and motivated to be considered.  I am new to the graphic novel collaboration process.  However, I wish to learn and be discipled as it were in collaborating in the Alpha-Omega magazine.  Also, I am ready to be an extremely creative and confindent writer in a collaboration process.  I am a published poet in several journals, both acedemic and public, as well as a number of newspapers.  I served as the art editor for Envoi Lit. Mag. from Ohio University Southern, and have had five years as an Studio Art Major and an English minor (I'm taking a year off before finishing my degree).  I am a late in life return to school guy and have been actively writing, or working in publishing or retail as a lay minister.  I worked to build a church in LasVegas, and my wife and I, while still in the singles ministry, moved to San Diego from Phoenix, AZ to help reconstruct a singles ministry there.  This all happened in the nineties.  In 2000 I became extremely ill, and have spent the last eleven years sorting out my faith, health, and relationships.  I was in a medicated coma for 17 weeks in 2000, with a total of 5 months in the Hospital.  Severe damage was done to my body during that time, and my health is still extremely poor.  I was working in customer service at McGraw-Hill publishing when I became sick.  It has been extremely humbling and a gift from God.  I am currently now retired from MacGraw-Hill and receive a little SSD monthly.  SO I have had time on my hands, and I have been writing.  Mostly Poetry and Creative Idea storming.  My mind is constantly filled with creativity, more so than before the incident, and it overflows to the point that I carry several little notebooks  around with me, and my Ipod and Laptop, just so I can record everything.

Hello Kevin,

Thanks for the reply. That's great that there's a volume #2 in the works. I'm not sure how far long you guys are, or when you plan on setting a production schedule, but let me know if you guys are taking other contributors. I would be interested in collaborating with someone on a short story script.

Take care and have a blessed day!

Hello Kevin,

I just read the first chapter of Ragged Capes, and I'm already hooked! I really like the focus on the characters and their humanity, and the overall concept behind the book. I want another volume, lol...

Consider the words of C.S. Lewis:
"If there lurks in most modern minds the notion that to desire our own good and to earnestly hope for the enjoyment of it is a bad thing, I suggest that this notion has crept in from Kant and the Stoics and is no part of the Christian faith. Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at sea. We are far too easily pleased."

Annual Pilgrimage to San Diego! at San Diego Convention Center

Once again, an annual rite of passage for fans of all things pop-culture related is upon us....Comic Con International, in San Diego. After a two-year absense (which was basically due to forces beyond my control) I'll once again be on hand in the Small Press Pavillion (table Q-16) with plenty of copies of all four books in the award-winning Eye Witness series (and also the Limited Edition signed & numbered slipcase collection for you completests out there).  You'll also be able to see what…See More

Backup strategies

Hi all. I've been trying to get into a routine of backing up my computer data on a consistent basis, and I'm wondering what methods my fellow creative-types use. I know there are services like Carbonite that automatically back up a computer over the internet, but it doesn't really work for folks like me who routinely create multi-gigabyte Photoshop art or video editing files that are too massive for an online backup service to handle. For now, I've been alternating between a couple external…See More

Tips for organizing digital art files?

Hi everyone. I'm struggling to work on one of my New Years Resolutions, which was to streamline my digital workflow. (I've found that when my project files are nested twenty subfolders deep, I'm overcomplicating things.) So I'm asking around to the different online communities I'm a part of for examples and suggestions on how other people organize their project files. In addition to a webcomic (still just a "hobby" at magicalspacepony.com), I usually juggle a half dozen freelance comic book…See More

The 'Spirituality in Comics' Panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2011

In comics, movies, and even Broadway musicals like “The Book Of Mormon”, spiritual themed work seems to be unexpectedly coming from the least religious of sources.

Panelists including SERGIO CARIELLO (The Action Bible), RUSSELL DALTON (Marvelous Myths: Marvel Superheroes and Everyday Faith), BUZZ DIXON (Serenity/Hits & Misses), and MIKE SHIELDS (Blue Blazes) discuss how a new generation of comics and pop culture are exploring timeless truths and also address the question “Is Mass Media Our New Church?”

Welcome to the Christian Comic Arts Society (CCAS) Online Network!

Did you know that CCAS has monthly meetings in the Los Angeles area? Contact Eric Jansen for more info!

Also, members of CCAS have produced the APAzine ALPHA-OMEGA for over 25 years!  We have about five openings right now!  Contact Eric Jansen for more info!  (This is a 30-member active-participation-only photocopied magazine for Christian writers and artists who submit a "trib" every other month for fun, fellowship, and critiques by other members.  Between postage and your photocopying costs, you might pay anywhere from $5 to $25 per issue.)

Your current Board of Directors includes Eric Jansen (Secretary,)  and Kevin Yong (Treasurer.)  Both have served as President of the L.A. CCAS chapter.  Kevin is also the Assistant Central Mailer for ALPHA-OMEGA.  Also on the Board are Scott A. Shuford (Vice President) and Geoff Strout (Webmaster.)
