Area(s) of Interest or Expertise:
Comic book writer and artist, with a BFA in 2-D Animation.

I self published a comic book during my last year of school, called Plasmatic, which is currently available on Indyplanet. It's a comedic super hero story with deep spiritual undercurrents that wrestle with predestination/ freewill, and faith.

I believe that good storytelling should have a deep message that grows organically from the center of the story, not tacked onto the surface like a bad Christian retelling of bible stories.
My Testimony: (We encourage members to share briefly about how their faith in Christ has impacted their lives.)
I became a Christian at an early age. At 25 years old I sold my possessions and went to follow Jesus at an inner city ministry in Chicago. I worked as an editor at their publishing house for 4 years and then went to seminary where (by the grace of God) I got an MDiv.

Later I realized that I had never professionally developed my artistic skills, so i went to art school and got a BFA in animation.

Graduated in 2015. After a year of working office jobs I decided that i wanted to make comics.
Dream Job: (If you could have your dream job in the comics industry, what would it be?)
#1: The financial freedom to write and draw my own graphic novels, and possibly employ other artists and writers to continue several ongoing series that I hope to create.

#2: be the acclaimed director of several animated series and films.
Favorite Comic Creators:
Jeff Smith (Bone), Jim Shooter (Marvel comics editor in chief in the 80's), Warren Kremer (artist for Harvey Comics), Jim Davis (Garfield), Peyo (Smurfs), and Walt Kelly (Pogo). I also loved Karl Barks' Uncle Scrooge.

Other writers (non comics): CS Lewis, JRR Tolkein, GK Chesterton, Stephen King, Lloyd Alexander, L Frank Baum, Lewis Carrol, George MacDonald, Wilhelm & Jakob Grimm.

Comic Book Review: HeroBear and the Kid, by Mike Kunkel

Posted on August 7, 2017 at 2:00pm 4 Comments

A friend of mine recently reminded me that I need to be reading lots of comics if I am going to be making them.

So, one trip to the comic book shop later I discovered this wonderful all ages gem! Herobear and the Kid, by Mike Kunkel is absolutely glorious.

You can tell the artist is an experienced animator. All of the characters, even minor ones, have fun, well crafted designs. The art choice of leaving it all in black and white except…

Visually Representing Social Media in a Comic Book

Posted on July 29, 2017 at 5:08pm 2 Comments

How do you guys represent social media in your comics?

It is such a big part of our lives, it would make sense that it would be in our characters lives as well. but frankly, it is not as fun to look at.

A lot of it is text-heavy; and when there are pictures, it's the pictures that are interesting, not the format.

Any clues? Thoughts? Have you seen it done well somewhere?

I have a few pages of social media interaction in my comic and…

Christians, Storytelling & Subtlety

Posted on July 20, 2017 at 6:00pm 1 Comment

*I originally wrote this mostly as a reply to someone else's post, but I thought it was worth repeating in a blog.

I think if you are a Christian and a storyteller, you don't have to turn your writing into a superficial representation of Christianity. A good story is a good story, and it does its job whether you emblazon crosses all over it or not.

I remember when I worked as the Acquisitions Editor for a small Christian…
