Alec and Morp: Adventures in Imagination

Posted on March 28, 2009 at 5:54pm 0 Comments

Finished my second children's book - Alec and Morp: Adventures in Imagination.

Check it out at Sharing Books.com (you can follow the address below to take you directly to it). Feel free to download and comment, as it's free to anyone interested! I wrote and hand illustrated it, inked and colorized in photoshop.

Scatsby the Bear

About a week ago, I had my first children’s book published online. I began the book back in the late 90’s at college, and attempted later to have it published (to little success). It was only recently that my wife found Sharing Books, and I eagerly gave it a try. The process was fairly simple, though I did have much of the work already done through the scanning of illustrations and converting them to a PDF format. Recently I retyped the book, and edited some of the artwork in Photoshop. After… Continue

This is a link I came across in searching out fellow Christian talent. This is an artist who has some amazing thoughts on being an artist and serving God. Recommended reading!

Starting Out

As a Christian (and a Christian artist), encouragement is huge. I believe a brother or sister in Christ can help you learn or challenge you to take your walk to the next level. Take evangelism for instance. Many of us may really struggle to get out and do witnessing on our own. But add another Christian to pray and help generate discussion, and you are a bit more bold than you may have been. My Christian friends have really challenged me these past couple of years to listen more closely to what… Continue

Thanks very much for the awesome input. We are working on several of those things and I'll pass along your thoughts to the board. :) Check in with Eric Jansen on the group project work. I know we have a "street comics" tracs project that we've done in the past, and Eric may be setting up for another round.

HI Strad,

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm Scott A. Shuford, one of the new Board members. I wanted to stop in and say thanks for being involved with CCAS! If you have any input or would like to be involved with anything in particular, please let me and Eric Jansen (Membership Coordinator for CCAS) know by contacting us both through the site. We'll be making several announcements in the coming weeks, so stay tuned. To see a bit more about me, check out my profile here on the site. I'm looking forward to getting to know you better.

Consider the words of C.S. Lewis:
"If there lurks in most modern minds the notion that to desire our own good and to earnestly hope for the enjoyment of it is a bad thing, I suggest that this notion has crept in from Kant and the Stoics and is no part of the Christian faith. Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at sea. We are far too easily pleased."

Strad,
I've just written a proposal to some of the leadership within CCAS to have a Christian Comics Training Academy at the San Diego Comic convention. This would help young Christian comics creatives to get some good training in making Christian comics. This would be a three day set of courses with several tracts (writers, artists, etc) taught by working professionals. Comic books is a largely collaborative media that is a community effort. We'll see if the timing is right for it.
I enjoyed reading the CiV at ASU. It would be interesting if something similar is happening up the road from me at UA (Tucson).
Oh, yes, I lived in Kansas City during 2003-04.
God bless,
Don

Hey thanks for the kind words. The stuff on this site is just a sample. There's lots more at www.skitzoman.com -- and a book too!

Strad,
Thanks for the kind comments. Over the past several years we have seen an explosion of very
talented Christian artists and writers. I'm sure the Lord will use this talent to bring glory to Himself through comics and other media. This is a very exciting time to be in comics.

I'm glad that I'm getting some feedback on the reviews. There is some really good material being produced.

God bless,
Don

I like the dalek animation. I am going to want to make a short animation sometime between now and March. I don't yet have the exact thing in mind, but I will be working to come up with the idea soon.

Hey man, thanks for your comment it is certainly encouraging to hear from you. It would be awesome to team up on a project soon. I will certainly keep in touch. Do you do any flash animation?

Thanks for adding me as a friend, and for the comments on the Reformed Fruit video. You know, more than anything, that film was just me 1) playing with Windows Moviemaker and 2) goofing around with the microphone making ridiculous voices. I never got the knack of Illustrator, though I used Photoshop faithfully for December Sun.
I more or less gave up on the fruit, though I do have an idea I've been kicking around, about bringing them back someday.

You're art samples are fantastic! What do you usefor all the 3D images? I've toyed around with Google Sketchup, but have yet to get the hang of it.

Take it easy!

Thank you Christian. I really appreciate your comments. Now, your art is very appealing. I really admire how you contruct buildings and you color sense is captivating. Keep up the awsome renderings.

CCAS at Comic-Con

The 'Spirituality in Comics' Panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2011

In comics, movies, and even Broadway musicals like “The Book Of Mormon”, spiritual themed work seems to be unexpectedly coming from the least religious of sources.

Panelists including SERGIO CARIELLO (The Action Bible), RUSSELL DALTON (Marvelous Myths: Marvel Superheroes and Everyday Faith), BUZZ DIXON (Serenity/Hits & Misses), and MIKE SHIELDS (Blue Blazes) discuss how a new generation of comics and pop culture are exploring timeless truths and also address the question “Is Mass Media Our New Church?”

Welcome to the Christian Comic Arts Society (CCAS) Online Network!

Did you know that CCAS has monthly meetings in the Los Angeles area? Contact Eric Jansen for more info!

Also, members of CCAS have produced the APAzine ALPHA-OMEGA for over 25 years!  We have about five openings right now!  Contact Eric Jansen for more info!  (This is a 30-member active-participation-only photocopied magazine for Christian writers and artists who submit a "trib" every other month for fun, fellowship, and critiques by other members.  Between postage and your photocopying costs, you might pay anywhere from $5 to $25 per issue.)

Your current Board of Directors includes Eric Jansen (Secretary,)  and Kevin Yong (Treasurer.)  Both have served as President of the L.A. CCAS chapter.  Kevin is also the Assistant Central Mailer for ALPHA-OMEGA.  Also on the Board are Scott A. Shuford (Vice President) and Geoff Strout (Webmaster.)
