Characters in grey areas. What are your thoughts?

OK look, I'm not trying to be controversial here but I am so tired of Cookie cutter Good guys vs Bad guys, especially in Christian productions. When you really think about it, grey areas aren't only more interesting, but they are also more relatable. I am a God fearing man, who has always loved the Lord and done my best to be righteous, but I'm telling you everyone between Christ and the Devil is in a grey area. That doesn't mean that we can't be better, and act righteously, but we are all…See More

Profile Information

Location:
Everett, WA
Gender
Male
Area(s) of Interest or Expertise:
I am an artist, writer, and graphic designer on a mission to start a morally responsible comic book / video game / feature film based on my own intellectual property that will appeal to believers and nonbelievers alike. I'm a do-it-yourselfer with experience in Painter, Photoshop, Manga studio, Daz/Poser, Cinema 4D, Final Cut Pro, Logic, etc.
My Testimony: (We encourage members to share briefly about how their faith in Christ has impacted their lives.)
I was raised a Christian and have always seen his hand in every blade of grass, and felt his presence in every aspect of my life. He has protected and provided for me in many ways. He has given me strength and resolve enough to weather the secular world and keep my convictions, and he has shown me grace when I have faltered.

My philosophy is to be in the world but not of the world. It is much more difficult to operate in the secular world and keep your convictions, but the rewards for doing so are great. My goal is to reach those who can't easily be reached. I want to use morality tales and stories that mirror the Bible's in such a way that people may not even realize they are there. I will always show consequence, and be morally accountable, but I desire a subtlety that many Christians may not understand. I'm not interested in preaching to the choir and I wont be bogged down in puritanical thinking. That only further separates me from those who I am trying to reach.

This does not mean I throw caution to the wind. I whole heartedly believe that there are many parts of the body. There is a need for Puritans, there is a need for Charismatics, there is a need for Presbyterians, We need to stop bickering amongst ourselves and realize there is a place and need for all of us. What you believe is between you and God, just as what I believe is and you must follow the convictions God has given you. There is only one way to salvation, through Christ's blood, but the beautiful thing is there are many ways to Christ.

The world I have created is gritty, and sometime violent. If you have a problem with that as a Christian then I suggest you read your Bible and look at the great Christian works of the past centuries. I want something that anyone can enjoy and something that plants a seed, and lays the groundwork for being reborn in Christ's blood. The best thing I can do is make people aware of his grace, and to live as an example.

God bless,

R Jay
Dream Job: (If you could have your dream job in the comics industry, what would it be?)
I've already spent years developing Characters, archs, and stories. My next step is to find some assistance and backing to start my own comic/video game house. A lofty goal to be sure but I have trained all my life for this and know this is what God has for me.
Favorite Comic Creators:
I like old school story telling. I enjoy the reality of Batman, and the fantasy of Marvel. I admire Lee, Kirby, McFarlane, Kane, etc. but if I were to pick someone to emulate it would be writers like Tolkien and Lewis. They created entire worlds with design, as opposed to someone like Stan Lee who was brilliant but created his world by saying "let's just make them mutants".

What sets me apart from Tolkien (besides the fact that no one knows who I am at the moment) is that I want to use science more than magic. I want things to be more realistic.

Thanks man. That stuff is from a comic I did that I'm no longer working on, unfortunately. :P I couldn't keep up the weird ideas.

Consider the words of C.S. Lewis:
"If there lurks in most modern minds the notion that to desire our own good and to earnestly hope for the enjoyment of it is a bad thing, I suggest that this notion has crept in from Kant and the Stoics and is no part of the Christian faith. Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at sea. We are far too easily pleased."

CCAS at Comic-Con

The 'Spirituality in Comics' Panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2011

In comics, movies, and even Broadway musicals like “The Book Of Mormon”, spiritual themed work seems to be unexpectedly coming from the least religious of sources.

Panelists including SERGIO CARIELLO (The Action Bible), RUSSELL DALTON (Marvelous Myths: Marvel Superheroes and Everyday Faith), BUZZ DIXON (Serenity/Hits & Misses), and MIKE SHIELDS (Blue Blazes) discuss how a new generation of comics and pop culture are exploring timeless truths and also address the question “Is Mass Media Our New Church?”
