Area(s) of Interest or Expertise:
In May 2009, I decided to step out on faith and start working on my own comic, called "Lightweightz." It's about eight teens in California who discover they have unique abilities. How will they use their abilities? Will they view them as a gift or a curse? In essence, Lightweightz addresses the following questions: What if we could significantly impact others' lives by how we treat them? To what extent is the way we view ourselves and our place in the world reflected in how we relate to others?

A few months later, I connected with a priest and graphic novelist Earnest Graham, and we agreed to create a comic/graphic novel about the life of the apostle Peter.

Both projects are progressing nicely, and you can learn more about them by visiting the blog: www.rsquaredcomicz.com.
My Testimony: (We encourage members to share briefly about how their faith in Christ has impacted their lives.)
What can I say about God's love for and patience with me that can do Him justice? Regardless of what I'm going through, God reminds me that He's there, He loves me, and He wants the best for me. Recently He's been showing me how to have a more intimate relationship with Him, and to trust Him in everything.
He's been putting this comic book idea on me for a few years now, but I doubted myself. However, He's been showing me that He will surround me with the people I need to help me bring this idea to fruition, and that all I need to do to move on my idea, and He'll do the rest...
Dream Job: (If you could have your dream job in the comics industry, what would it be?)
It would be a comics writer, whose primary job would be to brainstorm ideas and write really good stories, stories that illustrate (1) how dynamic and purposeful the Christian walk is (2) the beauty and God-given potential of humanity, and (3) the power of love in changing one's life and the lives of others.
Favorite Comic Creators:
I like Carey & Brubaker's X-Men stuff (I'm a huge X-Men fan), Hudlin's Black Panther stuff, Duane Swierczynski's Cable stuff (post Messiah Complex), and Ted Dekker's Graphic Novel's of the Circle Trilogy

Attribute Challenge Day 22: Elevator

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 6:25pm 0 Comments

Hello everyone,

I pray all is well. Normally I post for the attribute challenge at www.rsquaredcomicz.com, but WordPress is currently experiencing technical difficulties. Today's attribute is God and Jesus as elevators...

One of things I've been noticing more and more about my Christian walk is that things always work out for the better when I put God at the forefront. Sometimes, however, what "better" means to me is…

Hi Justin, it is also nice to meet you.  I am working on about a dozen stories, maybe more and write now trying to get them all from notes into a treatment type note that will give tag lines, and detailed plots and story lines taking maybe three to five pages each story.  I like to usually write fiction where one of the characters just so happens to be Christian, whither or not if they are the central character.  Sometimes the biggest way to make that impact we all want to make can be made by secondary or triciary characters that are Christians.  I love to write Graphic Novels.  I don't have one written as of yet, but I am trying to adapt from the short story method I just learned from college and making it go into script for an artist.  I am somewhat of an artist myself so I feel as though I can be very sympathetic to the work that it takes to illustrate a page, so I hope that will help.  I am also writing some screen plays.  The transition from story to script is my biggest challenge as of yet and I'm sure i just need to spend less time on facebook and more time cranking away at the type writer as it were.

CCAS at Comic-Con

The 'Spirituality in Comics' Panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2011

In comics, movies, and even Broadway musicals like “The Book Of Mormon”, spiritual themed work seems to be unexpectedly coming from the least religious of sources.

Panelists including SERGIO CARIELLO (The Action Bible), RUSSELL DALTON (Marvelous Myths: Marvel Superheroes and Everyday Faith), BUZZ DIXON (Serenity/Hits & Misses), and MIKE SHIELDS (Blue Blazes) discuss how a new generation of comics and pop culture are exploring timeless truths and also address the question “Is Mass Media Our New Church?”

Welcome to the Christian Comic Arts Society (CCAS) Online Network!

Did you know that CCAS has monthly meetings in the Los Angeles area? Contact Eric Jansen for more info!

Also, members of CCAS have produced the APAzine ALPHA-OMEGA for over 25 years!  We have about five openings right now!  Contact Eric Jansen for more info!  (This is a 30-member active-participation-only photocopied magazine for Christian writers and artists who submit a "trib" every other month for fun, fellowship, and critiques by other members.  Between postage and your photocopying costs, you might pay anywhere from $5 to $25 per issue.)

Your current Board of Directors includes Eric Jansen (Secretary,)  and Kevin Yong (Treasurer.)  Both have served as President of the L.A. CCAS chapter.  Kevin is also the Assistant Central Mailer for ALPHA-OMEGA.  Also on the Board are Scott A. Shuford (Vice President) and Geoff Strout (Webmaster.)
