similarities and differences between christiancomicarts.com and comicartfans.com

As a member of both websites, this has been something that I've been getting interested in lately. There's some notable distinction around the notion of 'ownership', but some similarity in terms of 'encouragement'. I find comicartfans to be a more active site with much more commenting going on. If people make 'too many' comments on christiancomicarts they can get accused of dominating the main page. There's a lot of nudity on comicartfans so sadly it's not a site suitable for kids. I personally think that's a real shame and would prefer them to start a separate site for the guys who want to collect 'nude art'. The vast majority of the site is ok though. What do you guys think?

I never heard of comicartfans. I would need to check it out. But yea, the nudity would keep me away.

I think maybe part of the issue is some of us have more to say than others...

The only thing where it kind of gets annoying is if someones tweets/blog posts become fast and furious over an issue, and then it seems like they've taken over a section of the CCAS boards. THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY THEIR FAULT. It's just the way things have been formatted - and if no one else has signed up for these "services" or isn't adding their two cents - then it looks like a  domination thing.

Essentially, from my perspective, if you have something relevant to add, do it. Although I do admit that for some reason, we have a seeming group of "same" people tossing stuff up, and a bunch of other people showing stuff and no one seeming to respond.

Maybe people are shy...or just busy? The other side of it, if there are crickets chirping, then someone has to keep the conversation(s) going.

Let us consider: Ask and ye shall receive; Seek and ye shall find; Knock and the door will be opened unto you  - so if you are looking for help with your pictures - be specific. IF you are looking for work - be specific - if you are looking for other things and want conversations with people be specific.

In the spirit of the above: Please, add your images and conversations,  direct us to more information (links to your website or relevant articles) and add conversations. Thank you! (p.s. I am not a moderator, nor do I control any aspects of this site. This is just someone adding to the conversation :) )

Hello Adam,

I once asked another member to blog or discuss rather than use multiple status entries since those push everyone else's recent activity out of sight. Maybe I was wrong to bring that up I admit. But as for a general attitude of ownership of the site, I don't see a problem. Can you think of any other examples of 'ownership' issues here? I see the opposite, a lot of the folks go out of their way to encourage posts by commenting and discussing with almost everyone who posts. Believe me, I've seen some Christian boards where nobody responds to anything, and they are dead and lifeless like Europe's great cathedrals... in contrast this site and Christian-Comics on Facebook are really happening places:) You say comicartfans.com is better in this regard, and I do not doubt you. What do you think would improve ChristianComicArts.com that you see in the Comicartfans.com community?

Hi guys, thanks for your replies! I think it is the way that this website is currently set up. It's very 'transparent' I guess. By that I mean that when you comment on a piece everybody sees you've commented.... So if you're commenting on say 10 pieces then it does look like you're dominating the main page. When I said 'ownership' I meant that on CAF (comicartfans) if someone posts an image of original art they are effectively saying (unless they mark it as sold/wanted/etc) that they currently 'own' that piece. Thatis the main point of that website: collectors of comic art showing their collections. To me this can be a personal challenge given Jesus' instruction not to store up our treasures on earth but in Heaven.
However, I've been a comic collector since I was a kid so this tension is not a new thing! This is the 'ownership' I was referring to in the original post, however the 'ownership' of the website is another interesting consideration.... Bill Cox owns/runs CAF and he's been really helpful to me & a lot of guys with the 'hobby'. I'm not personally collecting original art pages right now, and am registered on CAF as an artist/collector. I'd be interestd to hear how many other christiancomicarts members are also members of comicartfans (if any) and what their observations are.

When I said I not currently collecting, i mean I'm not currently buying new pieces. Another caf member recenyly described himself as being 'custodian' of the pieces in his collection. I think that fits better with Christian values, however there's still a tension there for me!

Thanks for your comment Martin, I re-read them and agree that it's something to do with the way the site is formattted / designed. I would certainly comment more on other people's pictures if I thought I wouldn't be dominating the main page. I don't know why everyone needs to know who commented on what on the main page....?

Hi Todd, yeah check it out! Anyone can go and have a look around at the art.... and there are some amazing collections there, with original art from such legends as Jack Kirby.... Steranko..... Neil Adams..... etc etc.... there are thousands of great pieces there, and also work by amateur artists, but yeah, there is nudity and 'horror' stuff there too. Some pretty profane stuff...... but also some really wonderful and religious art there too! The nude stuff SHOULD all be marked as 'members only', meaning you should need to 'log in' to access it, but that really doesn't always happen, so there's sadly no way you can let kids browse the CAF site. I think this is a big shame. But I guess censorship is a really tricky and subjective thing!

Hi Gerard, thanks for the comments, I just re-read them. I'm pretty sure I remember the thing you're talking about with the other member (I think it was fairly recent?), and I personally for what it's worth don't think you did anything 'wrong' by trying to direct the other member to a more appropriate part of the site. I don't really get the distinctions between some different parts of this site... This is the first time I've posted in the 'discussion' section as I had something on my mind and wanted to see other people's views.... So far I've really appreciated the comments I've got back. It's nice to get comments back!!! :-) I also like giving people positive comments to people's art on Comic Art Fans site... and to be honest find it quite an 'addictive' little pastime... It feels good to give people positive comments and encouragement. Especially when there is a 'shared interest'. On CAF you can easily see ALL of the comments each member has made because there is a 'comments link' to click on each members gallery page.... but every comment you make there is NOT 'broadcast' on the main page.... with the thousands of comments being made on the CAF website this would be totally impractical. I wonder whether a similar system could be set up on the Christian Comic Arts site???? I'd certainly make more comments, etc if I knew I wasn't pushing other people's comments off the main page! Thanks again! :-)

Hi, i sent a suggestion email to the moderators about the 'comments'. Hoping this is a constructive discussion! :-)
I'd be interested in people's views on collecting art and comics. I'd guess there are a wide range of views out there... Could be an interesting discussion...? As I said above, comicartfans is primarily a site for collectors, but there are a lot of artists there as well..... And some well established artists who also collect other artists' original work. As I also said above, there is an inherent tension there given the instructions of Jesus about storing treasures in Heaven, not Earth..... & not being able to love God AND money. I collect comics and original comic art. Anyone out there a 'collector'...? :-)

I'm not sure there is much tension to this.

I collect CDs (music), DVDs (films), and books (novels, history, philosophy, etc.)... I have hundreds and hundreds of each. Under my staircase, packed away for years and years now, are thousands of comics I had since I was a kid. Yep, I'm a collector.

Do I value these things? You bet. I take good care of them. But are these things my "treasures" as is meant in Matthew 6? Nope. ...Are these God's reward for me being such an AWESOME Christian? (Yeah, right.) Nope. Hardly.

Keep your eyes on Heaven, folks. But be free in Christ to enjoy the things here while we are here.

CCAS at Comic-Con

The 'Spirituality in Comics' Panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2011

In comics, movies, and even Broadway musicals like “The Book Of Mormon”, spiritual themed work seems to be unexpectedly coming from the least religious of sources.

Panelists including SERGIO CARIELLO (The Action Bible), RUSSELL DALTON (Marvelous Myths: Marvel Superheroes and Everyday Faith), BUZZ DIXON (Serenity/Hits & Misses), and MIKE SHIELDS (Blue Blazes) discuss how a new generation of comics and pop culture are exploring timeless truths and also address the question “Is Mass Media Our New Church?”

Welcome to the Christian Comic Arts Society (CCAS) Online Network!
