A Network of Christian Fellowship for Comics Fans, Pros, and Amateurs

If you have any suggestions for script writing for a 3d animation short, please post them.  As you all know, this is all digital, from typing it up, to sketching out pics in blender uv/image with a tablet, to modeling from the images, to rigging, etc..  The time frame is 2 years... and this is the pre-production point.  Suggestions are desired.  Particularly those based off of some kind of experience.

I'm not familiar with Blender but I know Maya and 3d Studio Max. If you get your hands on Maya or Max there are good scripts on Rigging and Image Based Lighting at creativecrash.com. These scripts can reduce time on rigging and lighting- which for my experience can be the longest part of development. It all depends on what look you're going for. First and foremost you need to create pipeline.

 

Story plot solid summary

What the films about, what happens in it and extra variations that may or may not appear in the final product.

 

Storyboards

Basic sketches of the scenes.

(Time usually taken = 6 months)

 

Voice recording/ Musical Score (if any)

Choosing the real music for mood and action is very important in scene development.

 

Storyboard reel

Usually, a defined animated sequences of the final animation from the storyboards.

 

Concept art

This optional if this is a one man project but it helps to setting a mood.

 

modeling
Everything is still in frame form, no textures but the models are rigged.


Shot layout
Fully textured and rigged characters are set into positions to work out camera angles and movement.

 

Animation
The models are animated in their scenes

 

Lighting

Lighting is added to the scenes, Lighting is what actually makes everything look great. Lighting is based on the storyboard reel.

 

Rendering

The final product is rendered.

 

Touchups

Special effects and sound effects. I suggest After Effects or Motion.

Thank you, Kendall.  I appreciate you taking time out to give me this pipeline information.  I'll do my best to follow this pipeline.

 

Maya & 3DS max... I would love to use these.  The cost is too much for me.  I'm using blender and probably doing my rigging in Project Messiah 5.  Whatever I use, I'm trying to keep in mind that I would like to own my artwork at a commercial level.

 

After Effects..  I don't own it yet, but hopefully when I need it, I will.

 

 

 

 

You need a post production software like After Effects, Final Cut 'cause it makes life easier. One of the fastest way to render is rendering a scene in passes. For example, if you have a room with a character walking. First, render just the character without the room. Second, render the room's basic color without the character and shadows. Third, render out the shadows of the room. With a post-production software like After Effects, you can place all your elements together for a final render. This method is also good for color correction and/or modifications. So, try not to render everything in one shot. The scene will take to long and in some cases kill your computer.
