Exodus 33&34

What an astounding pair of chapters (Exodus 33&34): God and a man conversing “face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.”   Such a conversation was a complete novelty then and, for most of the human race, is a novelty today. Selah.  {selah is a Hebrew instruction used in psalms, meaning pause and consider. }

Moses is concerned with retaining God’s blessings but he is even more concerned with retaining God’s presence. Moses hungers more for God’s presence (Ex33:18) than for the blessings of the Promise land(33:15) that God was guiding them towards. Selah.

If by God’s grace you are one of the fortunates who have been adopted by God (Romans 8:15-16) then you get both his blessings and his presence. Blessings are for everyone because our God is so gracious; his presence is a precious gift that should be a passionate goal of ours.
